Volunteer A lot of people ask us what we need, and the answer is always the same: We need help. The engine that makes the boathouse run is the volunteers who finance and run all of the activities. All of the facilities, including the boathouse fleet of over 40 kayaks, is provided and maintained by us, the boathouse volunteers. The boathouse does not receive any direct government funding. We provide both the financing and the labor to operate all our programs. We encourage everyone to try volunteering. Most of us find it very rewarding. We always need volunteers at all levels, all our programs are free, and it's a great way to get active in the local paddling scene. The only prerequisites are that you are over 18 years old, and know how to swim. If you are an advanced paddler you can come on our advanced tours, trips, and classes, and/or help to lead trips. If you are a beginning paddler you can start with our introductory programs and work your way up to the more advanced trips and classes. If you don't want to paddle at all, but still want to help out, you are welcome. Volunteers who make a significant commitment to the Boathouse and who have the necessary training are eligible (and encouraged) to try out the various Boathouse-owned kayaks, including our traditional decked kayaks. We run a number of free training sessions for our volunteers, so anybody who is prepared to make an effort, can quickly learn the required skills. You can stop by any time and volunteer. We can usually put you to work right away, but the best time for new volunteers to come by is in the morning because we are less busy, then we can give you some training and show you the ropes. We also run a number of volunteer-training and orientation sessions.
