The Downtown Boathouse

Promoting Public Access To The Water For All

The Downtown Boathouse is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free public access to the harbor in New York City through public kayaking programs. Our mission is to encourage safe public use of the harbor waters of New York City and thereby provide residents of this space-constrained city with increased recreational opportunities. Our operations are made possible exclusively through volunteers and with your public donations.

Group Visits

On weekday days when the public program is not active the Downtown Boathouse runs free kayaking programs for local public schools, groups helping children with special needs, and other non-profit community organizations. Some of the organizations that have gone kayaking at the Downtown Boathouse include the Center Against Domestic Violence, Columbia Secondary School, the East Harlem Schools Organization, Recycle-a-Bicycle, Ronald McDonald House of NY, the Saint Francis School, the New York Harbor School, and Peter Stuyvesant High School. We also schedule free paddling sessions for large college student groups, such as NYU and Columbia University new-student orientation groups. To schedule a visit for your group, please contact
